Poor is the man whose pleasures depend on the permission of another. Madonna

Madonna isn’t happy with the “boring” movie roles she’s lately been offered. Casting, she complains, sees her as the mother of a “truculent teenage daughter.” “Mom” (real life mother of two) sees herself as the truculent one. She’s that and more – this always cutting-edge artist is “frighteningly” good at being anything she wants to be.

Madonna Louise Ciccone Ritchie (born August 16, 1958), better known as Madonna, is an American pop singer-songwriter, dancer, record, film producer, actress and a fashion icon. She is a multiple Grammy and Golden Globe-award winner, known for her ambitious music videos, stage performances and use of political, sexual, and religious themes in her work. Madonna is sometimes referred to as “the Material Girl” or “Queen of Pop” in the media.

Since her debut in 1982, Madonna has released many chart-topping albums and singles, and has sold more than 200 million albums worldwide.

Billboard reported that her 2006 Confessions Tour holds the record for the top-grossing concert tour by a female artist. According to both the 2007 Guinness Book of Records, and Billboard, she is the top earning female singer. Madonna is the richest female singer in the world, and one of the richest self-made women in the world, with an estimated net worth of over $850 million. On September 27, 2007, she was nominated for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. In 2001, the Guinness Book of World Records listed Madonna as the “World’s Most-successful Female Musician”.

Madonna was introduced to the gay community while still a teenager. It was her ballet teacher, Christopher Flynn, a gay man, who first told Madonna that she was beautiful. He also introduced her to the local gay community of Detroit, Michigan, often taking her to local gay bars. It is Flynn who encouraged Madonna to walk away from her full scholarship to the University of Michigan and move to Manhattan to pursue a career as a professional dancer. Upon her arrival, some of the first people she befriended were drag queens and gay rentboys.

After the launch of her music career and her entry into public consciousness, Madonna began to solidify her reputation as a gay icon. In the 1980s, Madonna was one of the first major celebrities to lend her support to AIDS causes. Many of her friends and inspirations, such as her ballet teacher Christopher Flynn, artist Keith Haring, and photographer Herb Ritts – as well as her brother Christopher – are gay males, and some of them have died of AIDS. The song “In This Life” from her fith studio album, Erotica, is about the loss of Madonna’s (gay) friends to AIDS, containing the line, “Have you ever watched your best friend die?”

One of Madonna’s biggest hits, 1990’s “Vogue”, is a song in tribute to the underground dance form known as vogueing which first found popularity in gay bars and discos of New York City.

“Deeper and Deeper,” a 1992 hit about a young man’s coming out, featured a small reprise of “Vogue”.

In 2003 Madonna kissed Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera onstage at the MTV Video Music Awards. According to Out Madonna shrugs off the attention the act garnered and her daughter Lourdes’ reaction to it (Lourdes told her mother people call the pop star gay and the girl has gained more consciousness of the gay community). “I kind of assume everything I do is going to appeal to the gay audience.

I’m just a big queen… it just means I kissed Britney Spears. I am the mommy pop star and she is the baby pop star. And I am kissing her and passing my energy onto her. Like, kind of a mythological fairy tale”, Madonna stated of the incident.

Madonna has been named by The Advocate as the biggest gay icon of all time over such icons as Judy Garland and Cher. To this day, Madonna’s gay following is one of the most loyal segments of her audience. While her popularity among certain other communities (like the African American and Hispanic communities, for example) has fluctuated over the years, her gay following seems to stay strongly intact.

Two noted authors, Elodia Tate and Yolanda King, daughter of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Coretta Scott King, will be the featured luncheon speakers Monday, September 13 at Noon.

The authors will hold a brief book signing of their new book, “Open My Eyes, Open My Soul,โ€ following their talk. Ms. Tate will also sign books from 5-7 p.m. at the Evening Reception.

Diversity 2004, one of the nation’s most extensive conferences ever presented on workforce diversity, will be held in Rochester New York, September 13 – 15 at the Rochester Riverside Convention Center. The three-day event is presented by the Greater Rochester Diversity Council (GRDC), Principal Sponsor, Eastman Kodak Company, and more than 20 other leading employers. More than 40 of the nation’s most highly-regarded diversity experts will present at 50-plus sessions on an extensive range of current workforce diversity issues.

In January 2004, Tate and King released their inspirational book, “Open My Eyes, Open My Soul,” with a foreword written by Coretta Scott King. The collection of writings in the book was chosen from over 1,000 entries by Yolanda Scott King, the first child of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and writer Elodia Tate.

The book features writing from previously unpublished writers and celebrities including Muhammad Ali, Maya Angelou, Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., Stevie Wonder, Dr. Bernie Siegel, Mattie Stepanek, Andrew Dan-Jumbo and Margaret Cho.

King and Tate have been guests on The Today Show and CNN’s American Morning, and featured in Ebony, Essence, The Boston Globe, and The New York Daily News and others.

Yolanda King was born in Montgomery, Alabama, the first born child of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Coretta Scott King. Yolanda King has been in the midst of the quest for human rights and peace all of her life. She has performed or lectured in 49 of the 50 American states as well as in Europe, Africa and Asia for educational, business and religious and civic organizations.

As a seasoned and respected actor, many of Ms. King’s stage, television and film credits reflect her commitment to social change and include portrayals of Rosa Parks in the NBC-TV movie “King,” Dr. Betty Shabazz in the film, “Death of a Prophet” with Morgan Freeman, and Medgar Ever’s daughter, Reena, in “Ghost of Mississippi.”

Elodia Tate grew up in a culturally diverse neighborhood in San Jose, CA. She worked for several years in the mortgage industry and has written for newsletters specializing in the mortgage arena for homeowners.

In the early 1990’s, Elodia moved to Modesto, CA and discovered she had lupus. She chose a natural approach to managing her health. Since 1995, Elodia Tate has been coaching others to better health!

Elodia’s four children have an ethnicity that is a blend of African-American and her own Hispanic, Caucasian and Native American descent. Living with them as a multicultural family and seeing firsthand the blessings, as well as the issues, of diversity are what have brought about her urge to bring awareness and enlightenment so that we may walk a more peaceful path on this planet.

It’s not every day Judith Muro and her family are invited to dinner in a chauffeur-driven limousine. But the 21-year-old WSU student is not your everyday kind of girl, and there was a good reason for celebrating May 29th.

โ€œJudith is blessed with a gifted voice,โ€ said 18-year-old Clarence Steele, a producer and consultant, among other things, at Joe Anthony Productions, a recording label for his family-owned recording studio known as Studio 79 where he is an engineer and musician.

โ€œJudith’s CD, titled โ€˜Last Kiss,’ was officially released May 27th and I wanted to do something nice for her as a small token of our company’s appreciation for the hard work she has put forth, not only in recording the songs but, also, for her ability to translate the lyrics to Spanish,โ€ he said.

However, there was another reason to celebrate and Steele thought it would be best to do this over dinner at El Sombrero Mexican Restaurant.

โ€œI like to mix business with pleasure,โ€ he said, โ€œso I invited the Muro family to join in the celebration because they are proud of Judith, too.

โ€

During dinner Steele presented the Muros with a business report detailing an accurate account for every CD used in national press releases and also CDs placed in stores that currently stock it. Right now the CD is available at all major on-line outlets such as BarnesandNoble.com, Amazon.com, CircuitCity.com, and CDnow.com just to name a few. For more listings check out Muro’s website at www.JudithMuro.com.

The big surprise came when Steele explained to the Muros that tickets at their daughter’s first out-of-state concert are available at Ticket Master for $12 โ€” $25.

Muro is one of several featured guests of The East LA Revue All-Star Band appearing with Chico Vega’s โ€œDrifter’s Tribute,โ€ Lloyd Price, and Jay & The Americans June 22nd in San Dimas, CA at the Bonelli Family Music Festival, which Johnny Otis founded 13 years ago.

The 81-year-old entertainer is a living legend who is mostly known for his big hit โ€œWillie and the Hand Jive.โ€

Steele has been in contact with Otis and learned he โ€œhas modeled an amazing number of contrasting musical hats over a career spanning more than half a century.

Bandleader, record producer, talent scout, label owner, nightclub impresario, disc jockey, TV variety show host, author, R&B pioneer, rock & roll star โ€” Otis has answered to all those descriptions and quite a few more.โ€

Although Otis will not be at this year’s concert โ€” nothing serious, just old age โ€” Steele says he is looking forward to meeting the headliners and, also, the featured guests of The East LA Revue All-Star Band, which he has been commissioned to record via a contract with Steven Chavez the band’s promoter.

โ€œI agreed to record,โ€ said Steele, โ€œif Judith could join the featured guests.โ€

Another featured guest of Chavez’s band is Mickey Lespron, lead guitarist for El Chicano โ€” an internationally known Latin rock pioneer band that has shared venues with such diverse artists as Olivia Newton-John; Rod Stewart; ZZ Top; Chaka Kahn; Chicago; Earth, Wind and Fire; War; Santana; and Michael Jackson.

Other guests include lead vocalist Bertha Oropeza for Chico, and the Perez brothers for The Premiers โ€” guitarist Lawrence and drummer Johnny.

According to singer/song writer, and author Mark Guerrero, โ€œThe Premiers’ record, โ€˜Farmer John,’ reached number 19 in July of 1964,โ€ and further states, โ€œThey have the distinction of being the first east side Chicano rock group to achieve national success in the 60s which helped open the door for the Blendells, Cannibal & the Headhunters and El Chicano who followed.โ€

Guerrero โ€” son of legendary singer/composer Lalo Guerrero โ€” has been in contact with Steele and is looking forward to meeting him and Muro at the concert.

He lives in Palm Springs and has an awesome website: www.MarkGuerrero.net.

Prior to the concert is a scholarship fundraiser that both Steele and Muro have been invited to attend June 21st at the University of California in Riverside. She will sing with East LA Revue and he will record. It is billed as โ€œPachuco Nites โ€” Chicano Oldies Danceโ€ with performances by a second band, Lil’ Bit of Soul. Radio Aztlan DJ’s will also be there.

The night prior to that they both will be special guests on Radio Aztlan โ€” 88.

3 FM locally, and can be heard on-line via www.KUCR.org. They will be interviewed by El Beto Man, who is a DJ and one of the organizers of the UCR dance. The broadcast will air midnight to 2 a.m.

Another DJ, known as Angel Baby, is currently trying to set up a TV interview in East LA to have Muro sing a few songs from her new CD. She was there last year and Steele was able to incorporate one of the songs she sang, โ€œAngel Baby,โ€ as a CD-video bonus on her โ€œLast Kissโ€ album.

Also in the cards is a business meeting the Walla Walla duo will have with Paul Politi, vice president of Original Sound Entertainment โ€” the company Art Laboe founded with his โ€œOldies But Goodiesโ€ LP series. Politi wrote โ€œThose Oldies But Goodies,โ€ which was a big hit for Little Caesar & The Romans in 1961.

Steele says he and Muro are looking forward to meeting with Politi to further discuss possible contracts for some of Muro’s songs to be used in Hollywood motion picture sound tracks, and also on compilation CDs with famous artists.

Politi’s boss, Art Laboe, said, โ€œI love Judith’s music and would like to hear more of it.โ€

She already has an endorsement by Rosie Hamlin (of Rosie & The Originals) who wrote and sang โ€œAngel Baby,โ€ which sold over 4 million copies. Hamlin, the first female Hispanic to be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, introduced Muro to Politi via a phone call with Steele.

Politi first saw Muro when she flew with Steele to attend Rosie’s performance at Bowzer’s Ultimate Doo Wop Concert last September at the Amphitheatre in Universal City, CA.

Muro was one of three couples that participated on stage during the Bowzer Dance Contest.

Brenton Wood also has given his endorsement for Muro’s Spanglish version (part Spanish and part English) of his hit song โ€œI Like The Way You Love Me.โ€ Laboe’s company bought the rights to Wood’s songs and wants Muro to sing as many of them in Spanglish as possible.

โ€œThere is a great interest in the East LA Hispanic community for Brenton Wood’s music,โ€ said Politi, โ€œand to have his songs sung in Spanglish would increase this demand.

โ€

Both Hamlin and Wood are scheduled call-in guests during a three-week debut of Muro’s CD on KYVA radio station in Gallup, New Mexico, which began Friday June 6th at 8 a.m. PST, and will continue for two consecutive Fridays thereafter. Check out their website at www.rockinoldieskyva.com.

โ€œThe station’s DJs, George and Sammy, did the same for my CD,โ€ said Steele, โ€œand it was great to do a live interview with them. KYVA covers four states so it is tremendous exposure.

โ€

Steele’s CD was also debuted concurrently on other stations including the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Museum’s radio studio in Cleveland, Ohio by Steve Kurtz.

โ€œSteve was a visiting DJ from the Philly area at the time,โ€ recalls Steele, โ€œand Terry Stewart, president of the Hall, was so impressed with his program that he invited Steve to put together a special doo wop concert. The next thing I know Steve contacted me and asked if I would like to be showcased and open for the headliners to which I agreed, but added that I would like to have Rosie and Judith there as well, to which he consented.

โ€

There is no doubt that Judith Muro, known to many as โ€œThe Spanglish Girlโ€ is going places. Steele has mailed out so many CDs at the post office that they asked if they could have a copy to play for their customers.

โ€œIt’s strange how it works,โ€ said Steele. โ€œJust the other day Paul, from Martin’s Jewelers, was in the post office, heard Judith’s CD and inquired as to where he might get a copy. The lady told him about me, and the next thing I know he is playing the CD for his customers.

โ€

Muro’s CD is available at Hot Poop, La Hacienda, La Plaza Latina, CD Exchange, WWCC book store and in various stores outside of the area such as regional Tower Records.

The album has 10 tracks, nine in Spanglish and one in Spanish. Additionally, there is a bonus track that has a CD-video of Muro singing โ€œAngel Baby,โ€ which Steele obtained from The Johnny Jay Show in East LA, and then edited and remixed it for better quality playback.

As for the future, โ€œI’m ready for national TV exposure,โ€ said Muro, โ€œwhich Clarence is currently negotiating.

โ€

Las Vegas always has a party going on, but not many are so big that they require multiple locations. CarnaV้ 2003 is the new kid on the block, but the event will fit perfectly here: it’s a wild, festive celebration that rolls from one hot spot to another in our city that never sleeps.

Don’t you just hate this town? (Me neither.)

CarnaV้, the brainchild of event marketer Gene Dibble, is an international celebration of Latin music and culture. The “V้” stands for Las Vegas, the chosen venue, and “Carna” recalls the well-known Carnaval of Rio de Janeiro. Dibble professes the ambitious goal of making this event as popular as Carnaval. Oh, and one more thing: “Each year we will come back and create one of the biggest parties Las Vegas has ever seen.” It’s a tall order, but given what I know of Latin American culture, it’s just possible.

What’s a Las Vegas party without beautiful, poised women dressed to thrill?

Other events at CarnaV้ 2003 included: Noches de CarnaV้, CarnaV้ Revent๓n, Moda de CarnaV้, Oasis de CarnaV้ and the Miss Mesoamerica International Beauty Pageant where over twenty of the most beautiful women from Latin America competed for the coveted crown.

The Miss Mesoamerica pageant was founded by Francisco Cortez in 1992 as a celebration of Mayan (Central American) culture and beauty, but it quickly grew into a broader international pageant.

Now presented in Las Vegas as part of CarnaV้, it includes contestants from all over Latin America. Judging by this year’s competitors, I’d say there’s a plenty of beauty to go around.

The party began Wednesday, September 10 with “Cine de CarnaV้” and a screening of the award-winning bilingual film “Blue Diner” from Puerto Rico. The film event took place at the Palms Hotel Casino and was followed by a reception (which, in Las Vegas, means “party”) and Q&A with executives from the film and the industry.

“Noches de CarnaV้” continued the festivities Thursday and Friday with two dance parties at the upscale nightclubs Curve (inside the Aladdin Resort Casino) and Venus (in the Venetian). Also on Friday was a special publicity event in the Venetian: Actor Mario Lopez and musician Tito Puente, Jr. presented a check for $25,000 to the Hispanic Scholarship Fund on behalf of CarnaV้, and the pageant contestants dazzled the crowd with their bright smiles and red evening gowns. The event wasn’t given a name, but I would suggest “Ogle de CarnaV้.

“

You can’t have a summer event in Las Vegas without a weekend pool party. After Saturday’s “Moda de CarnaV้,” in which the pageant contestants modeled fashions and jewelry from Venezuelan designers at – where else – Fashion Show Mall, everyone repaired to the Hilton’s newly updated pool area for “Oasis de CarnaV้,” featuring The Girls From Ipanema and other live music performers. The highlight of the evening was the oh-so-unpopular swimsuit and “best body” portions of the pageant. I had made plans out of town that day and am now seeing a good psychiatrist.

Miss Venezuela’s victory that evening propelled her to ultimate triumph in Sunday’s main pageant extravaganza in the Venetian’s C2K Showroom, where she was crowned Miss Mesoamerica 2003. (She won best swimsuit and Best Personality awards also.) Another party followed (as if you had to ask), at the Prana Restaurant to close the festival for this year.

CarnaV้ coincided with the kickoff of Hispanic Heritage Month here in the States (September 15 through October 15). In Latin America, of course, every month is Hispanic Heritage Month, and the festive mood of this brief celebration can be found in everyday life there.

Tempted to move south? Don’t worry – with Las Vegas its new permanent home, CarnaV้ will bring the fun back to us again next year.

And the winner is . . . everyone, of course. Salud!

“THE BLUE DINER” AT CARNAVษ 2003 LAS VEGAS

Latino Public Broadcasting Executive Director Luca Bentivoglio screened THE BLUE DINER during the inaugural edition of CarnaV้ during Cine de CarnaV้, at the Brenden Theatres 14 at the Palms Casino Resort followed by a Q&A and a reception that included Producing/directing/writing team Natatcha Estebanez and Jan Egleson and co-star Jos้ Yenque.

The reception was held at the Ghost Bar at the Palms Casino Resort.

The feature film was presented on PBS by WGBH Boston scheduled for broadcast nation wide on PBS stations mid-September. Funding was provided by Latino Public Broadcasting, the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, and public television viewers. Proceeds of the screening will benefit KLVX-PBS, Las Vegas.

One of the few fully bilingual American independent films, THE BLUE DINER, tells the story of how a Puerto Rican mother and daughter confront a lost father, lost language, and lost love.

Misunderstood and equally stubborn, these women clash powerfully and comically until they realize how much they need each other. The film stars Miriam Col๓n (All the Pretty Horses, Lonestar) and Lisa Vidal (NBC’s Third Watch, I Like It Like That, Lifetime’s The Division) with Jos้ Yenque (Traffic, The Price of Glory) and William Marquez (Zorro, Forces of Nature).
